Essential Oils for Students

Test taking season is always a high stress time of year for students and their families, filled with anxiety, worry and fears that only make the situation worse. A lot of parents struggle with helping their children stay calm, focused and happy when they know that some of the most important tests of the year are just ahead of them. Unfortunately, in order to perform well on a test, students need to be at their best mentally too, making all the jitters and stress something that you need to learn to manage. Essential oils have long been used for their stress reducing effects, and test season is a great time to put the best of them to work.

If you have a child that will be going through a series of school tests this year, use these essential oils in their bedrooms, study space and added to their baths to promote a calm and mood boosting atmosphere.

Lavender Essential Oil

Lavender is the most popular essential oil for stress relief, because it really does have an all body calming effect. Headaches, sleeplessness, tight muscles and anxiety can all be relieved through the use of this oil. The best part is, lavender has a great scent and can be used in so many different ways so it is easy to add to the daily life of your children when they need to relax and study.

Grapefruit Essential Oil

Grapefruit essential oil is the best stress busting and mood enhancing essential oil from the citrus family. Grapefruit oil is used to destress, but also as a motivator, to help students get over those study bumps. When you notice any fatigue in your student, or they are struggling to keep at it, but need to, add grapefruit oil to a diffuser for a natural boost.

Spruce Essential Oil

Spruce is a very specific type of essential oil and it is actually used in a lot of confidence boosting blends. On test days, spruce is a great option, applied topically, or diffused in the morning before heading to school. Spruce is a natural stimulant, creating a calm and confident atmosphere for anyone using it, which is exactly what everyone needs when going into a test. Spruce has been claimed to open the pineal gland, a small endocrine gland in the vertebrate brain. It produces melatonin, which helps regulate sleep and wake cycles.

Chamomile Essential Oil

Did you know school-aged kids need anywhere from 8 to 12 hours of sleep a night with younger children needing the most. We are all familiar with the benefits of chamomile tea around bedtime, and the essential oil has the same effects for children. If your kids are not tea drinkers, chamomile is a great essential oil to begin diffusing in their bedrooms on the nights leading up to test days to promote sleep. Additionally, chamomile has been used as a traditional medicine for thousands of years to calm anxiety and settle stomachs.

See where I get all my Essential Oils.

Colored Rice Recipe and Tutorial

One of my daughter’s favorite things to play with is colored rice in the sensory table. All of her friends parents are forever asking me where I buy the colored rice and I have to giggle a little when I tell them that I actually make if myself. Just in case you don’t know what a sensory table is, it’s actually just like a sandbox but in a smaller container. Ours is actually kept in a Rubbermaid container but any container will work. What you want to look for when picking out a sensory table is a container that the kids can lean over and reach inside easily yet it needs to be big enough to keep most of the contents inside.

This activity can last forever. The kids love it! They love the way it feels when they reach in and touch it and it’s actually really pretty even when your colors get all mixed together. We call it rainbow colored rice at that point. Once you get your colored rice into the sensory table you can add trucks, sandbox toys, strainers, funnels or you might even want to hide some acorns inside for your little ones to find.

There are tons of uses for colored rice all you need to do is be a little creative with your thinking. It looks fabulous put in layers in glass jars and makes an excellent display. We also like to fill old water bottles with the rice (make sure the bottle is not wet inside) and add little trinkets and then we shake, rattle and roll it around to try to find all the goodies hidden inside. It’s a fun way to play eye spy perhaps at the dinner table waiting for the meal to be served. You can also use it to glue onto a piece of card stock and it make a fabulous masterpiece that your child can be very proud of!

Colored Rice Recipe and Tutorial:

Ingredients:

  • Rice (I found a large bag of long grain rice at the dollar store for under $2)
  • food coloring
  • vinegar
  • essential oil (optional but helps to keep the smell down from the vinegar)
  • Large zip-lock baggies
  • parchment or waxed paper
  • gloves (optional)

Directions:

  1. Add 2 cups rice, 1 tablespoon vinegar and food coloring (as needed*) to a zip-lock bag. One bag per color.
  2. Once everything is in the bags make sure you zip them shut tight. You don’t want to end up getting food coloring all over your counters.
  3. Start shaking and blending the contents around so that all the rice gets covered. If the color is to light just add more coloring.
  4. Once you have the desired color of rice it is time to dry it. Take either parchment paper or waxed paper and line the inside of a pan. I use a different pan for every color that I have. A sheet pan or cake pan will work great. Spread the rice out in a thin layer to cut down drying time.
  5. I actually set mine outside (espeically if it is a sunny day) and expect about an hour to dry. I ran out a few times and mixed it around so that the rice on the bottom could get dry also.

*I usually use a lot of food coloring so that I can achieve very bright colored rice. I think I used around 35 drops of food coloring to each two cups that I made. Start in increments of 10.

Once the rice is dry it is ready for your child to play with. Put it in a sensory table add some buckets and shovels and your kids will have a ball. Enjoy!

The Best Hair Masks Online (out of the Salon!)

Does anyone have envy over celebrity hair. I know many of these stars do not just roll out of bed and look amazing. There are tips, tricks and secrets.

Today on Facebook, I scrolled through this from The Today Show and I had to know more. Apparently, celebrities are turning to Hair Masks.

The article explains:

“Hair masks are intense conditioners that have more fatty acids and lipids in them which can return moisture to the hair and help protect it,” explains James Corbett, celebrity hairstylist of James Corbett Studio in New York City and color director for Clairol. “When the hair is healthy, the cuticle stays closed, which means less frizz and your color looks better because light reflects off your hair. Masks can help repair what styling and the environment takes out.”

I wanted to share with you a few of the top sellers. They explain the more pricey items contain oils that others to do. I planned to go with a middle of the road product – I want to save but also to not spend money on a product that is a waste. Which do you plan to try.

The article has a great list of masks, but I found them cheaper!
