What is Elf on the Shelf?

Elf on the Shelf is a Christmas Tradition. The tradition has a book and a elf doll. The book is poetic and in rhyme sharing the purpose of the Elf’s visits. The Elf visits each Thanksgiving. He/She goes and returns from the North Pole each evening. Every morning he can be found in a new location in the house. The Elf has been found in the refrigerator, fishing in the toilet, writing messages on the mirror or hanging from the lights. It is VERY IMPORTANT, the Elf is not touch each evening or his Christmas magic will be lost! Each family is able to name their special elf. The elves return to their home (Santa’s North Pole Work shop) every Christmas Eve. An Elf’s Story can also be found on DVD.

Then the recipient becomes the gift giver and the fun Halloween tradition is passed along throughout the neighborhood.

You’ve Been Booed Instructions

What are the you’ve been booed instructions? The instructions are simple. This Halloween traditions starts with one giver who prints a you’ve been booed poem.

Fall is here, the air is crisp,
To celebrate this little Halloween gift.

It was made especially for you,
It’s a sweet surprise named a boo.

Secret friends have left it here,
To bring your family some holiday cheer.

Enjoy your treats, they are yours to keep.
No one will tell who left this treat.

Attach your boo sign where it can be seen,
make sure to leave it there until Halloween.

The gifter secretly leaves (boos) two more houses with a tasty treat. They leave behind the printed you have been boo’ed poem, sign and ring the door bell and run.

The receiver hangs the “we’ve been boo-ed sign” so it is visible on the front door or window for others to see. They return the favor and become the gifter to two more neighborhood homes. The process continues until the neighborhood is boo-ed.

Include the you have been booed poem. You can include directions to boo friends on the back of your boo poem. Truthfully, this round-up was a little bit difficult. Maybe people are not using gift tags anymore on presents (are you?) Whether people are using labels or not, the internet didn’t have as many “Pinterest Worthy” gift tags as I would have assumed.

I have to admit, I don’t use gift tags often. In fact, the way I label the kids presents from Santa is with photo stickers I pick up from Shutterfly. I just add a photo of them this year, choose a different color frame for each child, and then write their name on the label. This is how they identify which gift is for them on Christmas morning.

These Shutterfly photo stickers come in a back of 24, which is always enough to get me through Santa’s gifts. They are $6.99 but often go on sale for much less.

Grab some hot cocoa, stir it with a candy cane and cozy up to these DIY Christmas decorating ideas. Enjoy.

Santa Log Christmas Craft

This Santa Claus craft is a pretty easy wooden holiday craft. You will split your work up but over all, it is a quick and easy Christmas project. We used Red Pine logs, because they have a thicker and rougher bark which gives it the rustic Christmas decor look we are going for.

Materials

Only a few materials are needed for your log slice craft.

Wood logs – sizes from 6” to 2’
White craft paint
Santa red craft paint
Black sharpie
1 Bag wooden button plugs
Foam paint brushes
Sandpaper
Clear Matte top coat spray (Krylon or Rust-Oleum are both fine)
Saw
Optional: Black paint, Hot glue

Craft Smart Acrylic Paint Set is great for small craft projects like this.

Directions

1. First start with a log. Any variety will work but I used Red Pine, It has a rougher bark which makes it more rustic.

2. Carefully cut the logs in lengths from 6” – 2’ feet or taller depending on where you want to use them. The various lengths are so that you can bundle them and have the different levels.

3. Carefully cut the bottom flat so they can stand easily. Cut the top at an angle. You may want to make marks on the log before you cut so that you get the angle you want.

4. Sand the angle section of the log to remove any bumps. If the tree has sap that is coming out of it then let it sit for a few days. This will allow the sap to get a little hard and easier to remove.

5. Start with painting the top 1/3 section of each log in the Santa Red color, let dry and reapply.

6. Then move on to paint the bottom 1/3 section in the white. Let dry and repeat if necessary. I paint some of the bark to so that it goes down the front, sides and back to add a little more color.

7. Once the paint has dried then take a pencil and determine the center and then make small dots where the eyes should go. Color them in with a black sharpie. You can use black paint if you want but sharpie works great.

8. Take the button plug and place it on the Santa and make sure the location is correct, then I put wood glue on it and stick it on. Hot glue would work fine too. Since it’s on a angle you may need to hold it in place for a few minutes otherwise it can slide. If you cannot access a wooden button plug, try a flesh color pom pom.

9. The final step is to spray the top with a clear matte top coat. This helps keep the colors looking bright and safe from any elements like snow or water. You can spray the bottoms as well.
