Nature journaling can be done with kids, adults, friends, and family. Explore ponds, creeks, rivers, fields, trails, mountains, and more.

Today we will look at what is nature journal, how to create your own nature journal, and our fun pond life journal for young kids.

What is Nature Journaling?

In the same way that one records their thoughts and feelings, nature journaling can be done in parallel. Nature journaling is simply writing down one’s experiences and illustrations in response to the natural world. It’s a relaxing outdoor activity not only for adults but for children too. This fun outdoor activity connects the writer with the great outdoors and living world. Nature journals can be self lead through creative and free thought. Alternatively, nature journaling can be directed using nature observation worksheets or fun outdoor scavenger hunt printables.

How to Start a Nature Journal

To start a nature journal, grab paper and a pencil. That’s it. Free form is a great way to start writing and illustrating the observations you see in our natural world. Keep your paper together in a binder, folder, or notebook to create an exploration journal. A journal can be done over a short period of time like during a day or weekend. Nature journaling can also be done over a long series of time creating a lifelong diary or nature logbook.

How does an observation journal work?

The fun part about having a journal full of observations is that everyone’s will be different. The goal of nature journaling is broad. Journal entries can record changes in animal tracks, sketches of the outdoor environment, or even fictional stories about the environment one’s in.

In this pond life science activities printable set, experience nature by creating your own pond-life nature journal observations.

The fun part about searching and looking for things related to a pond is that everyone gets to be a part of the fun. We’ve used this activity during sleepovers, campouts, hikes, and even just a fun family day where we put the screens down, and spent time together, face to face.

Included in this pond printable activity:

  • Pond Explorer Cover Page

For many of these natural journaling printables, print as many as you need to make multiple observations. There are prompts to help everyone know what to write or draw, but after that, it’s how they see and perceive it. An observation journal is an easy way to slow down and enjoy the time.

Nature Scavenger Hunts

printable nature scavenger hunt ideas for kids at the pond

Kids love outdoor exploration through a nature scavenger hunt. The pond life activities worksheet includes two types of pond outdoor scavenger hunts including a Pond Scavenger Hunt for Nature and a Pond Scavenger Hunt with Photos.

Find some of the following things at the pond…

  • Duck
  • Frog
  • Lily Pad
  • Dragonflies
  • Birds
  • Insects

For literacy activities, the scavenger hunt with words is meant for emergent readers and older kids who can read. The scavenger hunt with pictures is meant for young kids who did visual images of pond items they can look at and find on their own.  Pair up older explorers and younger kids and do both!

Let each child create a check or circle over their items found so little learners can work on their fine motor skills during the small pond theme activities.

More Ideas for Nature Journaling at the Pond

Don’t forget to change it up to work for your needs!  Make this printable nature journal for kids your own! You can use it just like it is or change it to something new.

Some fun ideas to personalize this pond life nature journal includes…

Have a fun prize

Don’t forget the prize and make it a friendly competition. It’s always fun to motivate people with a prize! If you can think of fun pond prizes, that is even better. A small prize would be gummy worms (to be like fishing worms!) and a larger prize could even be a fishing pole! Hit the dollar store to see what you can find.

Keep track as you go

If you want to make a point system, adding a counting element is a fun way. Have everyone count how many frogs they find, count the lilypads, and more! This turns the fun into a math activity. I think that we ended up counting 15 frogs and over 30 lilypads on our outdoor pond adventure. We all had a blast using this as our basis! There are so many things that you’ll see that you can add to the list as well. Have fun with it and go with the flow coming up with new ideas as you explore.

Collect fun things

Scientists and naturalists will enjoy having a small bucket or bag to carry the items they collect. Bring your fun trinkets back to the classroom and look at such items under a microscope.  You can use such items to make your own nature arts & crafts or add to a fun hands-on nature sensory bin.

Add a photo contest

You’ll undoubtedly see a ton of really cool things while you’re looking around the pond. See who can take the best picture and share it with everyone! Use the nature treasure hunt to create your own photo scavenger hunt with pond items or photograph things not found in the outdoor treasure hunt like…

  • Pond patterns
  • Eggs, tadpoles, and frogs to create your own illustrated frog life cycle
  • Turtles
  • Cloud patterns

May the best photo win. Use your photos to add to your nature journal scrapbook.

This outdoor pond printable is easy to use and fun as well! Get ready to be in a friendly competition with the kids because you will look for everything, just like they are!

What ages can participate in this pond journal activity?

Who says you must be in the same room as family and friends to do a fun activity? This virtual scavenger hunt proves that technology and clues can go hand in hand! Adults and teens can use the clues on the screen to find things around the house and race against one another. This is so much fun for a rainy day or a great way to plan a fun activity with those that you can’t be with physically at the moment.

Sometimes, taking a break from the screen isn’t what we all want to do. This is especially true with rainy days, down days, holidays, or just times that you’re missing someone that you can’t be with.

This is where having an online scavenger hunt is a great idea! It steps up the routine phone call or online game. Parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, friends, and even 3rd cousins can grab a phone, tablet, or computer. With one of those electronic devices, all you need next is a will to play – perhaps a bit of youthful energy.

The fun part about this editable scavenger hunt is that you can use the options listed or easily make up your own. This means that you can use the template over and over again so that it never gets old. With each new virtual game, twist up the virtual scavenger hunt list with your own desires and likes. Even fit your clues into any holiday or special occasion.

Not interested in changing it up? No problem. Best of all, even if you play the same game over and over, your answers will be different as the candy you had in the house in October might not be the same candy you have at home in March. Getting started with this scavenger hunt for adults is as simple as downloading the file, having a good internet connection, and allowing the fun searching to begin!

Who will be the winner? Only time will tell!

What age is this scavenger hunt for?

There is no age limit on this scavenger hunt. However, this virtual treasure hunt is best geared toward adults and teens because it requires a smartphone, computer, or tablet. In addition, the virtual treasure hunt really brings out a youthful competitive spirit in adults – reminding adults, they can have fun too!

Play with…

  • Adults
  • Teens
  • Grandparents
  • Family
  • Friends

That doesn’t mean that kids can’t join in on the fun. In this case, it is best to have an adult or pair older kids with younger kids for help.

What are the rules of scavenger hunts?

This is a find-it-fast virtual scavenger hunt though it can be played in person too.

The best part about scavenger hunts is that the rules are totally basic. With this printable, 36 scavenger hunt clues are already ready to go. Since the digital file PDF is editable, there is plenty of room for you to add your own.

smartphone texting game for adults - printable virtual scavenger hunt game

It’s always a good idea to set some basic rules so that everyone is on the same page.

  1. Decide on a moderator. This person will send a group text for each item to collect. This can be done over a smartphone, Zoom, Google Meet, Skype, etc. They will end the text with go wait for all players to return a photo of the item. The text will look like “First item is something striped… and go!”
  2. Write down the first person to deliver a photo of the item over text or return the item in person or over video.

Figure out if you’re going to take pictures of items to text or if showing the items on the screen works for all. Also, if someone is using a computer and can’t take it with them, you’ll have to make it so that they can bring the item to the room to show on the screen as well. In fact, if you do it this way, you won’t have to get dizzy watching all of the players run through the house to find their item.

These simple scavenger hunt rules mean that you and your buddies can hit the ground running (maybe literally), trying to find all the clues.

It’s a scavenger hunt is a pretty easy game to play and it’s one that you can get started with ASAP!

Virtual Scavenger Hunt Clues

So now for the game – let’s talk about the supplies needed and example Virtual Scavenger Hunt Clues. With just a few materials, everyone is going to be involved and active – and having fun!

The more people that join in on the fun, the crazier and more competitive it gets. It’s always a fun idea to have adults working their brains and bodies – and this scavenger hunt will have them doing just that. It can even be used ice breaker or team building exercise for the office. Have teams compete in different areas of the office and work on problem-solving skills in a unit.

Make sure to have your camera finger ready because there’s a good chance that you’re going to get some epic photo moments on this wacky adventure.

Supplies

Remember how easy I said that this scavenger hunt game for adults was? You’re able to literally print instantly and use it!

  • Printer (with ink)
  • Printer paper or cardstock paper (my favorite set)
  • Laminator (optional – I love this one)
  • Computer or Smart Phone
  • Virtual Scavenger Hunt Clues
  • Optional – Timer

Who presents the virtual scavenger hunt ideas?

You will need to have one person being the moderator. They will be the ones that will present the clue, and then everyone participating will be off to the races. A host is a neutral person that will keep track of the score and the rules.

Example Scavenger Hunt List of Items:

  • A clothed selfie in a bathtub
  • Something with stripes
  • $0.67
  • A mop
  • Something broken
  • A deck of cards
  • A vegetable

…only photographic evidence or something on screen counts. Get ready to have fun!

These are just a few options – and remember that you can easily add more to create your own unique virtual scavenger hunt lists! With an editable PDF, there are endless options to make and find scavenger hunt clues.

When should I use this scavenger hunt activity?

This can be used for virtual fun! It’s so much fun for a  family birthday as a way to hang out with relatives and include them in the day.

Use it for an office party and turn a mundane video conferencing call into a surprise virtual Soom scavenger hunt.

This would also be great to use for:

  • Virtual scavenger hunt for work
  • Holiday virtual scavenger hunt
  • Virtual baby shower scavenger hunt
  • Free virtual scavenger hunt for employees
  • Team building activities for youth groups
  • Family reunion

Having a virtual hunt means that the options are endless in ways that they can be used!

How do you keep score?

Let’s talk about how to score an adult scavenger hunt. The are a few ways to keep track of the winner. The moderator can keep real-time track of team members’ points. A leaderboard can be displayed on a dry-erase board with all participants’ names listed. The host can also text the group after each challenge with a list of each player’s points i.e Adam 8, Sarah 4, Jane 2, Mark – keep trying.

The host can adapt this as needed to fit their environment but generally, the virtual scavenger hunt rules are as follows…

  • The first person to return an item gets one point. You can also play with first, second, and third-place winners. For each round, the first person to return an item gets 3 points, the second person 2 points, and the last person 1 point.

Add a time limit or just let the wild geese players go. The game-winner is the player with the most totaled points last the end of all the rounds of the Virtual Game Treasure Hunt!

What are good prizes for a Virtual Scavenger hunt?

This game will get competitive. Virtual scavenger hunt games are a fun way to create bonds. Often the gloating, glory, and and team’s morale are enough intrinsic rewards. However, this fun game is for adults – have something really awesome they are going to work for.

Fun adult scavenger hunt prizes include…

  • Electronic gift cards
  • Wine
  • Small liquor bottles
  • Fancy restaurant certificates
  • Homemade dinner
  • Sports tickets
  • Entertainment tickets
  • Lottery tickets

While all the ideas are fun, think of a gift that could be sent over email – after all, this is an electronic scavenger hunt! Good prizes will really be a great incentive for crazy participation.

The last question remains…Where can I get this amazing adult scavenger hunt?

Get off the electronics and solve a few challenging riddles! This printable teen scavenger hunt requires brain power and fun sleuthing skills. Teenagers can solve the clues to find a prize! It can be used at a birthday party, sleepover or as a fun activity (just because)! Get ready to see some serious teamwork from the tweens ( that’s off the online game system!)

Teen Scavenger Hunt Printable Clue Cards with Rhyming Riddles

I love a good scavenger hunt. There’s just something so exciting about reading the clues, running around, and racing against the clock or someone else. Let’s just say that friendly competition is something that I thoroughly enjoy.

In addition to me, a middle aged mom, teens love to have fun too. And guess what?! Fun can occur off the phone and off the game system. Toss the electronics and enjoy a good ‘ole at home treasure hunt.

We’ve put together an epic scavenger hunt filled with fun riddles for teens. The good part about a printable scavenger hunt like this one is that it’s all done and ready for you. You don’t have to stress out thinking about challenging scavenger hunt clues. You don’t have to be a a mission to think of something clever to write that rhymes. We’ve done the hard work for you!

This fun activity for teens is as simple as downloading, printing, and letting the scavenger hunt games begin!

May the odds forever be in your favor!

What are the rules of a scavenger hunt?

Oh! You want rules and some guidance. Sorry, I thought for a second I was dealing with teenagers. Really, the great thing about a teen scavenger hunt is that you can have a basis for the rules, but they’re more than likely going to make some up on their own! The biggest thing to remember is that some printable cards and clues basically tell them what to look for – and that is the only rule that there is…. look for the next clue card until you get to the end.

If you have a lot of teens participating, it might be wise to create some basic ground rules like “no running in the house!” I might add in a few personal rules like “get along” and “don’t wreck mom’s house.” You can split the game up some, like player one finds the first clue, player two the second, etc. so everyone gets a chance to participate.

Other than those simple rules, the game is self-lead… let the games begin!

epic teen scavenger hunt at home with clue cards riddles

Printable Teen Scavenger Hunt Clues

The fun part about these clues is that they’re made just for teens! Have them work their brains and try to figure out where the next clue is hidden – and don’t give them any help (or at least for a while.) The hunt comes with answers to the riddles too (in case you find your are stumped as well.)

The more teens that are playing, the funnier it gets. This is because sometimes, more pots in the kitchen make that space too crowded. Who will have the right idea about where the next clue is? You’ll have to sit back and relax and watch to find out.

Supplies

You don’t need a huge list of items for supplies to do this printable activity for teens! I’ve made it easy as possible to print instantly and go!

  • Printer (with ink)
  • Printer paper or cardstock paper (my favorite set)
  • Laminator (optional – I love this one)
  • Teen Scavenger Hunt Printable Cards

Save this particular hunt for your tween. Are these hard scavenger hunt clues?

Yes and no. These are challenging scavenger hunt riddles for teens.  They are not meant for younger kids. Initially they will be hard scavenger hunt clues, however once your children get the hang of solving these rhyming riddles, they likely will get into a rhythm of guessing quickly. If you have a group of younger kids, pair them with older kids.

Want a variation with a harder modern twist? One fun way to add a bit of an additional challenge is to test the scavenger hunt yourself. See how long it takes you in your dwelling and then challenge the players with a time limit (less than what it took you.) Set a timer. On your mark, get set, go! Racing against the clock adds a bit of excitement.

What are some of the scavenger hunt riddles for teens?

Need a little sneak peek? Here are just a few of the riddles for teens clues that you’ll find on these printable cards.

Until you get your license to drive a car, my gears are your best means of traveling far.

Super cute, right? These clues for a scavenger hunt are written in riddle form and are challenging for teens but not too hard. The clues give them just enough of an idea to use their critical thinking skills and then figure the rest of the teen riddle out.

Wine and Cheese Party Ideas on a Budget

Wine and Cheese Party Ideas on a Budget

When preparing for your party, consider cheese boards an art form that involves much more than throwing some cheeses and crackers on a plate and serving it to guests. Putting together your first cheese & charcuterie board shouldn’t feel daunting. Follow a few basic pairing guidelines when selecting your ingredients, and don’t hesitate to try something new! We have Wine Party Ideas to match your budget and tips and recipes that you can prepare ahead, not only saving your dollars but saving your time!

Be an Expert – The More You Know

It’s important to be an expert in the field. Okay, maybe not a total expert but at least have a few fun facts in your back pocket. What is in a charcuterie board? Harcuterie (shahr-cute-uh-ree) is a French word for smoked, dry-cured, or cooked meats. Charcuterie itself describes an array of preserved and prepared meat dishes, such as cured sausages, hams, bacon, and more. These aged meats add the perfect addition to a Wine and Cheese Party.

Throwing a Wine Party Hosting Tips

If you are doing the hosting, a few at-home wine party ideas might help. I could have shared almost our entire post of our Party and Hosting Tips in this round-up. Be sure to look at that post as many ideas overlap for hosting a Wine tasting party. In addition to these fun ideas for a white and cheese party at home, make sure you have the right drink. Wine tasting party theme needs different kinds of wine.

Grab a few bottles of wine including

  • Chardonnay
  • Cava
  • Cabernet Sauvignon
  • Pinot Noir
  • Sauvignon Blanc
  • Prosecco
  • Merlot

Include a grape variety of both red wine and white wine. Know the location of origin for each bottle of wine and try different bottles both locally and around the worth. Popular wine regions might include Argentina, Chile, Napa Valley, New Zealand, South Africa, and the Champagne region of France. If you can not have different wine glasses for a bottle of each wine, then have something to easily rinse out each glass in between tastings.

Wine Party Printables

A few printables help create a wine party ambiance and a bit of fun entertainment. Visit our Wine Tasting Party Games to learn more about what to do at a wine-tasting party. We include printable wine-tasting scorecards, tasting notes templates, and wine party games.  Make sure to get to the bottom of the post as we have a very exciting free wine party printable for you – cheese markers to label your cheese and snack boards.

Let’s get started with some amazing Wine party ideas.

printable hotel scavenger hunt checklist for a vacation

Hotel scavenger hunt items include:

  • coffee pot
  • do not disturb sign
  • luggage cart
  • workout center
  • brochure
  • front desk
  • swimming pool
  • fire extinguisher

These are just a few of the items that the kids (and adults) can try to spot in the hotel! And who knows, you may end up finding even more fun items that you have to add to your own scavenger hunt list!

Make it Your Own!

Each user can make this scavenger hunt personal. Since we are all visiting different scavenger hunt locations and have various scavenger hunt participants, try some of these fun ideas to make the treasure hunt your own.

Hotel scavenger hunt ideas include…

Have a Fun Prize

Grab a few party favors or rewards for a special treat at the end of the hunt. A small prize can also act as a souvenir. Visiting Disney? Then grab a few princess party favors or mickey gifts off the internet before you travel. Hnad these items out to reward success at the end of the treasure hunt.

Count As You Go

Use the provided checklist for a hotel but allow the checklist items to add up. For example, did your team find multiple fire extinguishers? If they found 5, make that five points toward the scavenger hunt checklist total. The most points at the end of a set amount of time, wins.

Hotel Photo Scavenger Hunt

Create a virtual scavenger hunt and split up but make sure each team has a smartphone. Instead of giving each player a hotel scavenger hunt list of items, allow them to use their smartphone for a hotel photo scavenger hunt

In the same format, have the mediator text “the next item is a local map.” Each team will race to take a picture of a local map and text it to the group. The team that returns the first image to the group, wins that round. Continue on with fun items like

    • room number

Since a hotel treasure hunt is a public scavenger hunt, it’s essential to go over a few rules. Manors and teaming up are two of the most important scavenger hunt rules.

The indoor scavenger hunt rules are a combination of the hotel rules and your family rules. Make sure that the kids know that they shouldn’t be wandering around the hotel alone and to always be with an adult from their own family while looking for things. It’s important to also team up young kids and older kids.

Also, abide by the rules of the hotel that there is no running or disturbing the other guests! Have them take a pencil so that they can mark off the items as they find them!

How Well Do You Know Your Family Questions

If you are familiar with family conversation starter questions, then you will understand how these family game cards work. Typically conversation cards for families require someone to answer in a way that is telling about oneself. However, for a fun twist, in this know your family? game, the fun questions are not introspective. Instead, they require a player to ask interesting questions and the rest of the family answers the questions in observance of the person asking the question.

Let’s look at a few family trivia card questions…

  • Question: Who is my favorite teacher?
  • Question: Which song do I know the most words to?
  • Question: If I could have a superpower, what would it be?

If a family member gets the right answer, they get to keep the card.

Mini Family Challenges

To step up the excitement, there are competitive challenges in this fun card game for families. This allows, in addition to questions, a little bit of friendly competition and action via fun challenges to do at home.

These fun challenges include supplies found in the home but if there is something you do not have, it can easily be replaced with something else so there is no need to buy more than the game itself.

Examples of family-friendly challenge cards include…

  • Action: Start at a table with chairs. At go, all players must get up and run around the house. The first player back to their chair wins the card.
  • Action: All players fold paper airplanes. The paper plane that flies the furthest gets to keep the card.
  • Action: See which player can stack the most coins in 30 seconds using only one hand. The winner takes the card.

In each of these frantic family fun competitions, the winner is the first person to finish and takes the card.

Do You Know Your Family Game Instructions

Now that you are ready to play, it’s important to know the instructions. The how well do you know your fam game instructions are rather simple. The game objective is to collect the most cards by the time the game is through.

Once printed, you may choose to laminate your family game card set. This will help you reuse the set over and over. (However, if you don’t, save it to your computer to print as often as you would like.)

Cut your set of cards up to create a deck of cards. You may divide your conversation starter cards and action cards by card type or keep them as one complete set.

Start with the youngest player. Allow them to draw a card from the deck and ask a question or offer a family challenge. In challenges, the first to complete the challenge correctly gets the card. In game questions, the first to answer correctly gets to keep the card.

Make sure everyone has equal playing time.  Go around the circle until you exhaust the deck or reach a time limit. At the end of the game, count your cards.

The player that has the most cards wins the game and REALLY KNOWS THEIR FAMILY!

You can twist up this game in various ways. Ideas for playing include…

  • Play kids vs parents – which set of family members will get the glory of the win?
  • Play vs the clock – create rapid-fire questions with each answer or challenge having a time limit.
  • Play in pairs – pair up players especially if younger players might need older kids or adults to help them.
