Attention Ghostbusters… This Halloween Season, wouldn’t you love to trap your very own ghost in a bottle? With this simple and inexpensive DIY (Do It Yourself) project, you can!

If you have a recycling bin nearby, you have all of the makings for this fun and frugal DIY Ghost in a Bottle. Kids will love creating their very own ghost and trapping him in a bottle where they can make him do twists and turns all over the place. Take a look below at how to make your very own Ghost in Bottle, the perfect craft for the upcoming Halloween season!

DIY Halloween Ghost in a Bottle

Supplies Needed:

  • 1 clear 2 liter soda bottle
  • Orange food coloring (or yellow and red to mix)
  • 1 plastic shopping bag
  • 1 rubber band
  • Scissors
  • Marker

DIY-Halloween-Bottle-Ghost-Steps-frugal-coupon-living

Directions:

1. First, you want to remove all of the label from your 2 liter soda bottle. Rinse it well.
2. Fill the bottle with water and add a few drops of orange food coloring. Or, you can add a drop or two of yellow and red to mix your own. Place the lid back on and shake so your color mixes well.
3. Turn your shopping bag over and cut off the end, about 3 inches worth. The “end” of the bag is the very bottom where your items would rest in the bag. When you cut off the end, you are basically creating a smaller bag.
4. Hold the new mini bag under the faucet and put a few drops of water in it. This will create the head. You don’t want to add so much that your head won’t fit in the bottle, so only add a small amount. The water will also act as a weight, allowing the ghost to fly around the bottle. So take your time and make sure you do this step just right.
5. Twist the bag to create the head and place a rubber band on the neck to secure it.
6. You can now use your marker and create a face! A few dots is all you need.
7. Using your scissors shred the bottom of the ghost to make it look nice and spooky.
8. Press the ghost head first into the bottle. Replace the lid and give it a good shake.

That’s it! Your ghost will whirl and twirl all over the bottle in a spooky fashion your kids will love. The more they shake it, the more it will fly. Give this Ghost in a Bottle craft a try and see how fun and easy it can be trap a ghost while using items you already have around your home.

How Aluminum Foil Insulation Can Save Your Family Money

Have you ever tried to find the best way to save money on your electric bills in the summer and your heating bill sin the winter? Maybe you’ve tried a few different things and they’ve saved you a couple pennies here and there.

Aluminum Foil Insulation is something that you may not have considered before (maybe not even heard of before!) but it can be a great way to save your family money in both the summer and the winter! Aluminum Foil Insulation can be purchased online or through an RV  or camping store. You can buy several different sizes and everything should be a cut-to-fit piece so you can make it work anywhere in your home that you need it to.

Each piece of Aluminum Foil Insulation is made from foil on each side with bubble wrap in the middle, like a sandwich. The foils works in the winter by keeping your windows insulated (with the bubble wrap), thus keeping any heat inside instead of having it leak out the windows.

In the summer, the foil reflects the heat keeping it outside your home. The bubble layer also acts as insulation so it keeps your cold air conditioned air inside your home.

Unlike plastic window coverings, it’s easy to remove as needed and is reusable as often as needed. Aluminum Foil Insulation can just be purchased once and you can cut to any shape and use and keep it year after year. A single roll of insulation costs around $20 and can cover many windows (depending on size).

By using this inexpensive form of insulation you can help save money on your utility bills in both the summer and the winter from just a single item purchased!

Tonight’s recipe is an easy and healthy meal that’s perfect for make ahead meals. Similar to the bags of frozen Birds Eye Voila Skillet Meals, where you just heat and serve. Only you control the ingredients and keep the preservatives out. Change up the cheese, meat, seasonings and pasta for lots of different flavor combinations.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups broccoli florets
  • 1 ½ cups Monterey jack shredded cheese
  • 1 lb. chicken breasts
  • 1 cup chicken broth
  • ½ cup milk
  • 3 cloves crushed garlic
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • ½ tsp. pepper
  • 1 ½ cups uncooked bowtie pasta

Chop chicken into small bite sized pieces. In a saucepan over medium, heat 1-2 Tbsp. olive oil, add garlic and chicken, saute until cooked through. Set aside to cool.

Freezer Prep:

To prep for freezing, place; broccoli, chicken broth, milk, salt, pepper, and shredded cheese in a freezer safe gallon bag.

Cooking Directions:

Pour contents of gallon bag into sauce pan on low heat with 1-2 Tbsp. olive oil, cook until combined, Boil pasta for 8-12 minutes in 2 quarts of water. Toss pasta with chicken mixture. Serve.

Uses for Aluminum Foil

Need some more ways to use that aluminum foil sitting in your kitchen? I’m sure you already know that aluminum foil can be great for lining pans, cooking food on the grill, and more.

Here are some new ways you can find uses for aluminum foil!

  1. Create the perfect shaped pan. Use the aluminum foil to create special shapes like hearts, bears, and numbers inside your regular cake pan. Just crumple up balls of foil and place where needed to form the shape. Then put another layer of aluminum foil over the entire thing so you have somewhere to pour the batter into.
  2. Make fabric softener. Out of fabric softener? Wad up a ball of aluminum foil and throw it in the dryer and dry normally. The foil will help remove the static cling from your clothes so this would be especially helpful in the winter.
  3. Keep your slow cooker clean. Before you cook anything in your slow cooker, especially if it’s something really sticky like lasagna, line your slow cooker with aluminum foil. Once you are done cooking, simply remove the foil and toss. No dishes to wash!
  4. Keep the critters away from your trees. In the fall, wrap aluminum foil around the bottoms of your trees to prevent rabbits, deer and other creatures from chewing on the trunks. Make sure to remove right before spring.
  5. Keep matches dry. Going camping? Wrap your matches in aluminum foil first so no moisture can get through to them.
  6. Make a funnel. Don’t have a clean funnel on hand and you need one? Use the aluminum foil to form the shape of a funnel and use it in the kitchen, in the garage, or anywhere you need a funnel!

What are your favorite uses for aluminum foil?
