Save On a Large Appliance Purchase – 9 Tips to Help You Spend Little

Save-On-a-Large-Appliance-Purchase-frugal-coupon-living

One large purchase many people must make in their lives is buying a large appliance such as a refrigerator, dishwasher or stove. Don’t be fooled; you don’t have to pay a huge amount of money to get a good quality appliance you can rely on.

Let’s look at ways to save when buying a large appliance and getting them most out of your money.

1. Check out rent-to-own stores. No, I don’t mean do a lease contract. They will most definitely gouge you on price and your could end up paying 5 or even 10 times what something is worth by the end of it. Instead, see if they have any pre-leased appliances in the back or on display. You could get 20% off or even 50% off if the item has a couple dings and dents and negotiate.

2. Wait until the old models go on sale. Appliances are like cars-dealers make room for the newest models once a year and start offering heavy discounts on the older models. You can save up to 30-40% on perfectly good appliances.

3. Don’t forget to check the newspaper. Many times, liquidation dealers will place their ads in the newspaper for the amazing sales they have. Also, check on Craigslist as well.

4. Don’t snub used appliances. Just because an appliance is used doesn’t mean it is broken. Often times, people just upgrade and sell their old models that may only be a few years old and have nothing wrong with them. Look for ads in newspapers and online.

5. Many appliance dealers will price match with their competitors’ printed ads. Study the current prices and haggle your way into a good deal. Some will even let you come back a few weeks after your purchase was made. That gives you time to look for sales and to also compared to weekend holiday prices that might occur later.

6. Be careful with purchasing an appliance at a membership club. You not only need to pay the yearly membership fee, but often times, the delivery is extra, unlike at most major appliance stores.

7. Don’t choose an appliance solely on how neat the bells and whistles make it seem. Do you really need these extras or will not having them still be OK? Extras such as ice makers, self-cleaners and so are often can make a basic model start to cost quite a bit more and may not even be all that necessary. I have a friend with a washer and dryer that has a steamer… she has had the appliance for 5 years and NEVER has used the steaming feature! Imagine how much she could have saved going a model or series down.

8. Keep your appliances in good shape and they will last you longer. The more years you get out of them, the greater value.

9. Be an informed shopper when it comes to extended warranties. Many consumers get talked into one and never even need it or take advantage of it. Find out what your manufacturer warranty covers before signing up for an expensive extended warranty.
