12 Items Every Elf on the Shelf Mom Needs

If you are planning on doing the Elf on the Shelf tradition this year, you know you have many days of rearranging the elf ahead of you! Luckily, this can be a breeze if you keep certain items on hand. By keeping a stash of “elf supplies” within reach, you can be sure that you are always ready to put on a great display. Take a look below at 10 items every elf on the shelf mom needs, so you can be prepared this Elf on the Shelf season!

1. Marshmallows.

Mini marshmallows especially are great for making fake snow. You can also stick the elf in a mug of marshmallows to look like he is in a hot tub or bath. If you wish, marshmallows can even be used to spell out words or messages. See this Elf Marshmallow Bath idea.

2. Cotton balls.

Cotton balls make excellent snowballs. If you want your elf to look like he is ready for a snowball fight, tape one into his hand. 3. Dry erase marker.

Let your elf on the shelf “scribble” mustaches onto the glass frames of family pictures. You can also make red noses or antlers with the dry erase marker. 4. Mini note pad.

Sometimes the elves like to leave letters or notes. Keep a sticky notepad or notebook on hand so your elf can leave jokes and greetings. Add some more fun by using colorful markers, stickers, glitter pens, etc. See this Elf Shopping List idea.

5. Glitter or Sprinkles.

6. Gum drops.

7. String or yarn.

8. Felt sheets.

You can use crafting felt to make mini clothes for your elf, little skis, a surf board, a blanket, or all sorts of other props. Keep some felt on hand for these ideas and more. We created a blanket in this Elf is Sleeping idea.

9. Pipe cleaners.

Pipe cleaners can be turned into roasting sticks, used as ski sticks, or even just wrapped around the elf so he can be an escape artist. We used them as drum sticks in our band. Keep pipe cleaners on hand for all sorts of props. See our Elf on the Shelf Rock Band idea.

10. Doll accessories.

Grab a few doll accessories to keep on hand for your elf to interact with.
