Shopping for a baby is hard. Babies don’t require much beyond food, warm clothing, diapers, and a bed. There have been a few times I have wondered how to shop for my little ones at a holiday that was pretty close to birth. The mat was just that, large. You can see it easily fits Henry (twin A) and Elijah our toddler. The packaging was very thoughtful. Not only was it adorable, it was very easy to put together.   I really appreciate the FSC-certified wooden structure. It makes the piece very solid so I can trust (to an extent) my older son around the younger boy. The structure is sturdy meaning he can lean on it and it isn’t going to collapse. It can easily be broken down as well for storage or moving purposes.

The mat is also intuitive. This play Gym is designed by experts for your baby’s developing brain. The fabrics are soft and colorful – very aesthetically pleasing. The mat comes with toys as well as cards. One of our favorite feature are the gym’s activity cards. We used them for our 15 month old to identify parts of the face but we also used the black and white cards for the 8 week old twins as their eye site develops. It was amazing how they both tracked and focused on the cards. (You can see the video of Max above.)

We use our play gym at the very beginning of the day. Their brains are well rested and they are ready for tummy and back time. The mat is incredibly soft and great for room to roll over and move. I have placed all three babies on the spacious mat, though I usually spend time holding one while the other two play.

Each edge of the mat has a purpose for your child.  On the mat, there are five development zones that reveal or conceal to prevent over stimulation and promote brain and motor skill development:

All in all, there were a few features that were very appealing. On this mat, I could focus on fun with my babies without worrying about things I need to do for their development; a book came along with some ideas! Eight weeks of bed rest… no time for epidural during delivery. To say this pregnancy went as planned would be a lie.

We learned last spring we were expecting twins. This was around the time my youngest child was 6 months old. I had experienced back to back pregnancies before. In my twenties, I had both my older girls back to back (16 months apart) but something told me last spring, this road would be different.

The day before I turned 28 weeks, I began pre-term labor. I was apprehensive to go into triage because I feared the results. Either I was delivering too early or I was going to be assigned bed rest. Luckily, we walked away from the hospital a few days later with the lesser of two evils – to bed for me.

Bed rest took a long time. I had family come in to help with my 13 month old. I had no choice but to lay in bed for eight weeks with bathroom privileges. I was so grateful to make it to 36 weeks after a 28 week scare. However, the boys surprised us as we (and they) were still not ready when December 22 came. All of us were shocked by my water breaking at 1 am and the delivery an hour and a half later. Even the doctor barely made it to the hospital. He met my husband and I in the hallway where I was 10 cm dilated and holding the boys in with my hand. The team of nurses rushed me to the operating room for a c-section and as my husband was scrubbing up, he missed the vaginal delivery of our first son, Henry. Luckily in the commotion, a nurse noticed his absence and rushed to get him to great our second son, Max, delivered 7 minutes later. No time for a c-section (or epidural) for this mama!

I am grateful for the additional 8 weeks. This ensured the boys were fully developed and at a place to put on weight, but they still came in small at 4 lb 12 oz and 4 lb 15 oz. Even making it to 36 weeks, the boys needed help and our youngest, Max, entered the NICU.

Even as an experienced mom, every pregnancy and child comes with a new experience! This delivery and taking care of a NICU baby was a first for me. It doesn’t matter how many children you have, when a newborn baby arrives, you want nothing but the best for your child.  An additional child and additional expenses, remind me to focus on the basics (and the basics don’t have to be the most expensive item on the shelf!) Money-Saving Advice from an Experienced Mom

Can you remember the judgments you made before kids… the “I will never” statements and declarations you vowed to stay true? Regardless, I wanted my child to be surrounded by soft cotton, to make the outside environment of my womb feel as friendly and safe as the inside. It ought that was only created through buying the most expensive diaper. Now, I just consider it a blessing if my child has a dry and someone clean diaper!
