Get ready to get crafting and turn reclaimed wood into the most adorable Rustic Christmas Decorations.

Santa Log Christmas Craft

This Santa Claus craft is a pretty easy wooden holiday craft. You will split your work up but over all, it is a quick and easy Christmas project. We used Red Pine logs, because they have a thicker and rougher bark which gives it the rustic Christmas decor look we are going for.

Rustic Christmas Decor Holiday Woodworking Project Santa Logs

Materials

Only a few materials are needed for your log slice craft.

  • Wood logs – sizes from 6” to 2’
  • White craft paint
  • Santa red craft paint
  • Black sharpie
  • 1 Bag wooden button plugs
  • Foam paint brushes
  • Sandpaper
  • Clear Matte top coat spray (Krylon or Rust-Oleum are both fine)
  • Saw
  • Optional: Black paint, Hot glue

Craft Smart Acrylic Paint Set is great for small craft projects like this.

Directions

1. First start with a log. Any variety will work but I used Red Pine, It has a rougher bark which makes it more rustic.

Wooden Slice for Christmas Log Craft

2. Carefully cut the logs in lengths from 6” – 2’ feet or taller depending on where you want to use them. The various lengths are so that you can bundle them and have the different levels.

3. Carefully cut the bottom flat so they can stand easily. Cut the top at an angle. You may want to make marks on the log before you cut so that you get the angle you want.

Sliced Wood for Christmas Wood Craft

4. Sand the angle section of the log to remove any bumps. If the tree has sap that is coming out of it then let it sit for a few days. This will allow the sap to get a little hard and easier to remove.

5. Start with painting the top 1/3 section of each log in the Santa Red color, let dry and reapply.

6. Then move on to paint the bottom 1/3 section in the white. Let dry and repeat if necessary. I paint some of the bark to so that it goes down the front, sides and back to add a little more color.

Santa Wood Logs Craft

7. Once the paint has dried then take a pencil and determine the center and then make small dots where the eyes should go. Color them in with a black sharpie. You can use black paint if you want but sharpie works great.

8. Take the button plug and place it on the Santa and make sure the location is correct, then I put wood glue on it and stick it on.  Hot glue would work fine too. Since it’s on a angle you may need to hold it in place for a few minutes otherwise it can slide. If you cannot access a wooden button plug, try a flesh color pom pom.

9. The final step is to spray the top with a clear matte top coat. This helps keep the colors looking bright and safe from any elements like snow or water. You can spray the bottoms as well.

Build Your Own LEGO Christmas Nativity Set with Printable Challenge

LEGO Nativity Instructions

Follow these Nativity directions for how to use the Lego Advent Calendar.

  1. Print your LEGO nativity cards.
  2. Cut LEGO cards and place by order of day.
  3. Each day take a card and make the LEGO figure to add to your nativity scene.
  4. Read the accompanying Christmas Bible verse after (or before) you build.
  5. When all LEGO figures have been completed, read the full story of Christmas found in Matthew 1:18 -2:12: Luke 2:1-20.

For the LEGO printables, step-by-step nativity figure instructions are not included. Rather your child is given a a list of what to make each day. Let your child get creative with the pieces they have to create each character of the LEGO Christmas Nativity Set.

When incorporating science and math into the home, it doesn’t have to be boring, These engaging STEM Projects for Kids are perfect for a virtual learning, home school or for a school classroom. STEM activities for elementary, middle school and even younger!

STEM Projects for Kids

STEM Projects for Kids | Elementary, Middle & Preschool

Whether you’re homeschooling your kids or simply looking for a fun and educational activity to pass an afternoon at home, a STEM project can be a fun experience for the whole family. STEM stands for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Since those are some of the fastest-growing career fields, it’s a good idea to start early in cultivating an interest in the sciences and math. You’ll have no problem doing just that with the fun list of STEM projects for kids that we’ve compiled.

Most of these STEM projects use common household materials, so you can likely set up an experiment or project TODAY. Scan the list and get started! Don’t forget our five minute science experiements for kids before you go!

STEM Projects for Preschool, Elementary & Middle School

STEM Projects for Kids

Glowing Eggs Science Experiment for Kids | Stem Projects

Kids get a big kick out of making glow in the dark eggs. Although the process itself takes a few days, the experiment only requires a few minutes of prep. You’ll use vinegar to dissolve the egg’s shell plus an added ingredient to make it glow. The result is a rubbery, “naked” egg that’s lots of fun to examine. Use it to study the parts of an egg, to learn about osmosis, and to learn about simple chemical reactions. | Frugal Coupon Living

If you have Skittles and water in your home, you have everything you need to set up this quick Skittles Rainbow Science Experiment for the kids. Kids of all ages will enjoy watching the colors spread, even your toddlers and preschoolers. The warm water dissolves the sugary coating very quickly, releasing the colors into a beautiful rainbow. | Fun with Mama (See this same Skittles Rainbow Experiment with our Elf on the Shelf.)

Baking Soda Science Experiment & Stem Activities

The baking soda experiment is a classic; most everyone has done this experiment at home or school as a child. It’s easy to set up and is always a hit, though. The acid-base reaction creates lots of fizzy fun due to the carbon dioxide that’s released during the reaction. While you don’t have to dye your baking soda, we think it adds to the fun. Not only that, but it encourages kids to take note of the color mixing that occurs where the colors touch. | Frugal Coupon Living

Pencil Stem Activity | Preschool, Elementary, Middle School Ideas

Do you think a plastic bag poked with pencils will hold water? It will! This is a fascinating experiment. You’ll need really sharp pencils to push through the baggie full of water. What makes the water stay? Long-chain polymers from the bag seal around the smooth edge of the pencil to maintain the barrier. Isn’t that fun? | Hello, Wonderful

Glowing Volcano Science Experiment & Stem Projects

Our glowing volcano experiment can quickly be set up in just five minutes, and you probably have everything you need already. It’s your classic baking soda and vinegar reaction inside a playdough-shaped volcano with a secret ingredient to make it glow in the dark. | Frugal Coupon Living

Walking Water Kids Science Experiments & Ideas

Introduce your kids to color mixing with a super simple walking water experiment. You’ll need some small jars or bowls, paper towels, water, and food coloring. Pretty simple, right? As the paper towel soaks up the water, the color (and the water) start moving up and then down into the empty jars. Eventually, the colors from the two adjoining jars will mix in the empty jar, creating new colors. | Messy Little Monster

Oil & Water Kids Science Project and Stem Activities

You’ve probably heard the expression, “oil and water don’t mix,” but have you ever studied why? Explore the concept behind this common colloquialism with our oil and water experiment. Oil is less dense than water, so the two cannot mix. Using food coloring makes this concept clearer! When the droplets of colored water are dropped into the oil, they sink to the bottom. | Frugal Coupon Living

S'more Solar Oven Science Projects & Stem Activities for Kids

Summer and fall are the seasons of S’mores, so of course, this experiment making solar oven S’mores is sure to be a huge hit. Using common household materials like a box, foil, and plastic wrap, you can have marshmallows plumping up and chocolate melting over your graham crackers in no time. | Desert Chica

DIY Straw Rockets & Stem Activities for Kids

Your kids will love these straw rockets. Use the free printable rocket template, straws, scissors, and glue to get started. Have a contest to see which child’s rocket goes the farthest! This project helps kids learn about physics, particularly acting forces that put objects in motion. Add weight by attaching paperclips to see how that affects the rocket’s flight. | Artsy Fartsy Mama

Raining Cloud Stem Project & Activities for Kids

How do rain clouds work? Find out with a simple rain cloud science experiment using shaving cream, food coloring, and water. The heavy drops of food coloring break through the shaving foam cloud, just as rain clouds begin to break apart as they become too heavy with moisture. | Laughing Kids Learning

Stem Activities for Kids - Pencil Stack & More

Each year, you buy loads of school supplies for your kids. Use some in your science explorations! This post on STEM activities with pencils demonstrates a couple of ways to use pencils in STEM activities, such as building a tower or building shapes. | JDaniel4’s Mom

Stem Activities | How to Make an Art Bot

Make an Art Bot with the kids! This fun project uses a small motor (which can be purchased on Amazon for just a couple dollars each), a battery, some wire, and some markers, along with a few other materials. Kids will love watching their art bots scribble designs all over the paper. | Science Sparks

How to Make a Water Compass & Stem Projects for Kids

Make a water compass! This is a simple STEM activity that takes just a few minutes. You’ll need a magnet, a paperclip, a leaf, and a pan of water. Once the paperclip is magnetized, inserted into the leaf, and placed in water, it will slowly align the earth’s magnetic field, pointing north.  | The Gingerbread House

LEGO Challenge Game & Stem Ideas for Kids

Do you have a little builder on your hands? Print this awesome Lego challenge game to kick things up a notch. Kids create a spinner and then use the printable and the spinner to select an activity. It’s great for those, “Mom, I’m bored!” days that we all have now and then. Each spin tasks the kids with something different, such as building a pyramid, a robot, a plane, or building with one color. | Artsy Fartsy Mama

Ball Marble Run DIY & Stem Projects for Kids

Want to make a ball run or marble run without putting tape all over your walls? This magnetic ball run is a clever alternative using magnetic tape to put the cardboard tubes on the fridge instead. Encourage kids to design their own tube or tunnel system to see which way the marble gets to the bottom the fastest. | Taming Little Monsters

DIY Pom Pom Shooter & Stem Activities for Kids

Design a pom-pom shooter (or several) and have a fun afternoon blasting each other with pom-poms. It’s a fun alternative to a NERF gun because, hello, pom-poms are soft! You’ll need to find something to do with those pool noodles after summer’s over, anyway. One pool noodle can make lots of shooters. You’ll just need some balloons, tape, and pom-poms to complete the project. Don’t forget to discuss the forces behind blasting the pom-pom out of the pool noodle. | Hello, Wonderful

Bridge LEGO Challenge & Stem Projects for Kids

Challenge the kids to build a bridge using Legos, wooden blocks, pencils, or anything else they want to use. The bridge needs to support the weight of a can of veggies or something of similar weight. You’ll be surprised at the ingenious bridges they come up with. | Mama Smiles

Balloon Rocket Science Experiment

This balloon rocket science experiment is so fun! A straw is threaded through a string, and then the balloon gets blown up and taped to the straw. Let it go to see how far it travels. The more full the balloon is, the farther it will go. What other factors might affect how far the balloon travels? | Hands-On Teaching Ideas

STEAM Coconut Tree Craft & STEM Projects for Kids

Provide materials like a paper towel tube, playdough, pipe cleaners, and alphabet beads, and let the kids figure out how to construct a coconut tree for this cute STEAM Activity. It’s perfect for preschoolers and kindergarteners and goes along brilliantly with the book Chicka Chicka Boom Boom.  | ABCs of Literacy

LEGO Challenge STEM Ideas for Kids

Build a tall tower using your child’s Lego Duplos or other similarly-sized blocks. Have the kids work together to see just how tall they can build it. How can the tower be supported to build it even higher? Against a wall? Can you build it to the second story? Have fun with it! | Mama Smiles

Christmas family traditions can be intentional. They can remove the greed and return the focus to the reason for the season. Simplify your family Christmas with these Need, Want, Wear, Read Christmas Gift Tags. Four gifts under the tree. Our gift tags for Christmas also include a Christmas Gift Guide for ideas.

Need, Want, Wear, Read Christmas Gift Tags

Need Want Wear Read Christmas Gift Tags

Looking for a new Family Christmas Traditions? This is such an easy idea and really simplifies Christmas gift giving. Before beginning your Christmas shopping, focus on four things. Need, Want, Read, Wear. One gift for each category. Eliminate counting gifts under tree. Eliminate greed becoming the focus. Instead of quantity, focus returns to simplicity and allows for a greater focus on the reason for the Christmas season. Return the focus to the true gift of the season – the birth of Christ.

Christmas Gift Giving Ideas for Need, Want, Read, Wear

Christmas Gift Ideas

Ask your child to help. Tell them you want them to brainstorm gift ideas for the following categories – read, wear, want, need. If they need inspiration, you can share with them our Christmas Gift Guide for ideas.

M&M Poem for Thanksgiving

This cute Thanksgiving tag comes with a memorable and thoughtful Thanksgiving poem.

As you hold these candies in your hand, turn them and you will see, the W becomes an E, a M and then a 3.

W is for the welcome, all the people that really matter.

E is for eat, a large table set to gather.

M is for many, our blessings throughout the entire year.

3 is for 3.14, a ratio of pie for which to cheer.

Attach this Thanksgiving gift tag to a mason jar of M&Ms. Guess what?! My bag of M&Ms appear to be Thanksgiving themed, but they are actually Halloween M&Ms! I know Mars brand makes other varieties of M&Ms, so grab a bag that fits the color theme or buy a regular bag and pull out the greens and yellows if you have the time.

Tie your mason jar gift with a cute Thanksgiving ribbon. I love this wired  Orange Gingham Check Ribbon. I paired it with Orange Tulle Ribbon. The mason jars were something we had on hand but you could also pick up mason jars at your craft store.

You can gift this printable Thanksgiving gift tag to teachers, employees, neighbors, friends, family or even a host or hostess on Thanksgiving day. Fill a mason jar with M&Ms, tie a ribbon, add your M&M poem and whoa-la – you are done.

You can also take the time to personalize M&Ms.  Choose your favorite colors and add a message or icon.

I love the cute fall leaves and pumpkins.

Birthday Family Traditions

Let’s talk about family traditions for the birthday. I have learned (as I have had more kids) to keep it simple but special. While that can sound like an oxymoron, it’s important for us to keep the cost low but celebrate the child. One way we have kept birthdays family focused is by having a birthday celebration with friends, every other year. Then every year, we also have a family celebration. Sometimes, we choose to vacation (even if it’s only a weekend getaway) during the overlap of a birthday to make the child feel extra loved while surrounded by those that love her/him most.

Birthday Family Traditions and Celebrations

Take a look a these family birthday traditions in our original post idea – Family Birthday Celebrations.

Birthday Time Capsule

One way to celebrate your child is to continue a birthday time capsule. You can begin with a first birthday time capsule that you add to every year. This can be smaller box just to represent the first year of life or you can create a large memory box you add to each year. One idea is to go through art work, photographs, saved school work, special moments and see what you want to keep or toss. This is a quick and easy way to declutter as well as save what is important in a yearly time capsule.

First Birthday Time Capsule

What To Include in a Birthday Time Capsule
