Do-It-Yourself-Garage-Door-Makeover-Frugal-Coupon-Living

If you have been following me on Facebook, you might have seen my latest garage door design. I am in love with carriage garages but truly didn’t have the money to replace mine. I also wanted some curb appear to my home to allow it to stand out on my block. Using just around $150, I improved my door with a few easy steps.

Windows:

First, I had half moon plastic inserts in my windows. While this was fine for some, there wasn’t many arches on my home. Most things created right angels and I wanted this look universal. I called a local garage company who came out and checked my garage door. While they are usually in the business of repairing doors, the owner was more than happy to look at the brand of my door and order myself some new panels. Once ordered and shipped, the owner even came over and snapped the new windows in place.

Metal Accents:

Like always, I first shopped around online for metal accents. These were a bit pricey, but I didn’t quit. Eventually I took this search to stores in my city and scored at Home Depot. I grabbed a set of 4 spears and two handles for around $25. That is enough for one door but I wanted the double door look and bought two sets.

This was a total do it yourself project. I even added some young friends to the process and we all spent an evening perfecting our home’s new look. Involving your children can be very important important. When looking at our completed garage, they know they contributed to the home and most importantly it gave us time together. Young hands might have delayed the overall time of the project, but the memories and pride they received are priceless opportunities.

Windows: If you are in Tallahassee, call Kelly’s Garage door – tell him I sent you! I am not even sure he knows who I am, or that he was helping out Frugal Coupon Living. You can read more about this company on Angie’s list. He was about the third company I called and the only one more than willing and happy to help. Your local garage door company might even be able to help you find metal accents.

Metal Accessories: I found mine at Home Depot for about $25. I got two sets but you could get one. I wanted to double door look. This is not advertised on Home Depot’s website so go to your local store to see if they have them. I found them in a cardboard stand near the doors and garage door department. You can also take a look on Amazon under Garage Door Accents.

When I completed my job, many people (including neighbors) thought I invested a few hundred/thousand in a new door. I was pleased to say I was frugal on this home improvement design. The process gave my home a step up in look and a curb appeal for which I take pride!

Do not forget to sign up for the Home Depot Garden Club for added savings!

Note: I also found the carriage lights recently on Zulily. These were a bit more pricey, but I know Home Depot has some great prices. I saw this AFTER shopping online. I did not include these in my $150 price. Let’s just call them a bonus :) .
