skip-hop-owl

First let’s talk about some of the gear to get you started on being the cool mom around the lunch table. Your going to need a few basic items if your child is “Brown Bagging” it.  Wow them with a simple few additional accessories and your kid will likely leave now veggies or fruit on their plate.

Insulated Lunch Bags

To keep your child’s food fresh and tasty you want to invest in a good insulated lunch bag. It is possible with a good insulated bag to keep perishable foods at a safe temperature.

I love this series from Skip Hop. These insulated lunchie lunch bags are Affordable and adorable! Owls are trendy have been everywhere lately and somehow the cute owl bag made it into my shopping cart this year.

You can go with solids, patterns, or any number of popular characters to keep food cool till the lunch bell rings.

A Really Good Ice Pack

Just like the lunch bag you need one to keep perishables cold. Invest a little more in an ice pack that will keep your child’s food chill. I recommend having several on hand in case one is accidentally thrown away or begins to leak. There are many ideas but I particularly like the Cryopak Flexible Ice Two Pack.

Plastic Containers bento-lunch-box-4

You can go Bento-Style Box. Bento, meaning convenient, is a container that has multiple divided sections like this one. Love the look and durability of stainless steel! The possibilities are endless on what you can do with these cute little boxes!

Looking for something more frugal? You can pick up many cute single containers at Dollar tree, Target, or Walmart. These are perfect for snack foods, soup, pasta’s, cookies, or homemade fruit cups. Grab this Plastic BPA Free Set of 4 for $13.95.

A search on Pinterest will not leave you disappointed! Grab a variety and you will always have something on hand to fit that special treat.

Reusable Sandwich/Snack Bags

Though a bit of a pricey initial investment, Reusable Sandwich and Snack Bags will save you in the long run from buying countless plastic baggies, and not to mention the bonus of being a hip green momma. They are easy to clean and how could your child not smile opening their bag to something as darling as this  – The Green Sprouts Set of 2 Garden Sandwich and Snack Bag?

I have a few fabric snack bags and toss them in the washing machine with our laundry.

Cookie Cutters

Not just for cookies anymore! Use these to cut pizza into fun shapes, how about a PB&J shaped like a football? Cheese Triangles? What a fun way to put a little pizazz in their day! Try a simple set like this to start out like the Wilton Metal Cookie Cutter Classic Shapes.

Frugal-Coupon-Living-Simply-Sprout-lunchbox-note-printables

Some other tools that you may want to consider having on hand to help in creating fun lunches are; a paring knife, apple corer/slicer, lollipop sticks (kids love anything on a stick), cupcake liners, food coloring, and a sense of humor – After all, you might see your winning lunch box theme on “Pinterest, Your’e Drunk!”

FREEBIES

Do not forget the FREE Back to School Lunch Printables!  Make sure to print something fun or create a short personal note!

Stay with us for tips on creating themed lunches that will put a smile on their little faces. I can’t wait to share all that we are working on.

Six Awesome Ways to Do Water Play with Kids this Summer
Pin to Pinterest

We’re just a weeks into a long summer and you want to make sure you have plenty of ammo in your mommy arsenal to keep the kids busy! It’s a great time to be outdoors but oh so hot. Try some of these fun, and simple activities to keep kids cool and in the fresh air. With the exception of just a few items most of these supplies should be laying around your house or garage.

Bottle Sprinkler – Poke a clean 2 liter bottle with holes all around. Attach a male to male adapter that you can pick up at your local home improvement store for just a couple bucks. Connect your water hose. Drape the hose over a branch, turn on water. You now have now completed a homemade, recycled (pat yourself on the back here) and easy peasy project.

ice-cavating-frugal-coupon-living

Ice-cavating – Use a butter tub, or other disposable small plastic container. Drop several of your child’s favorite plastic toys in, fill to 1” from top with water. (Speaking of toys, dinosaurs make a fun archeology dig.) Freeze overnite. A few minutes before you’re ready to go outside and begin pull container from freezer to allow ice block to loosen from the sides. Take ice block outside and lay it in the grass. Give your child spoons, a magnifying glass and a bucket of water with cups for pouring . Encourage your child to experiment with different techniques to melt the ice and free their toys. Older children can be given additional items such as salt, or a mallet. If using a mallet or sharper tools, please keep children closely monitored.

Sponge Balls – Cut standard kitchen sponges into 3 strips, alternating colors-stack the sponges, twist small rubber brand around the middle, then spread the sponges and fluff them out. Give each child a bucket of water for rewetting, and several sponge balls. Don’t forget to stand back!

Water Bag Piñata – Gather a 5 gallon plastic bag (garbage bags can be picked up at Dollar Tree), a rope, a bandana or other blindfold, a stick or broom handle. Fill plastic bag with 1-2 gallons of water, then tie a knot in bag. Tie the rope just below the knot. Blindfold your child, and have an adult drop rope and bag over a limb- you can either tie it so it remains stationary or tease challenge your child by raising and lowering the bag as they swing. It could be fun to fill with new small water toys you picked up at the dollar store.

Sand-and-water-table-Frugal-Coupon-Living

Sand and Water Table – Make your own sand and water play tables by purchasing some inexpensive bins from Wal-Mart or the Dollar tree. Fill one with sand, and one with water. Provide your child with simple household items like; spoons, cups, sand toys, medicine droppers, funnels, colanders, etc. Besides just being plain old fun this will allow you to sneak in some learning- Measuring, mixing, bouancy, The Scientific Method (hypothesis) and fine motor skills through pouring, and scooping. Won’t you be the clever mama?

squirt-gun-phonics-frugal-coupon-living

Squirt Gun Phonics – Here is another sneaky learning game, you can do this on your driveway, or the side of a wooden fence or shed. Draw random letters, numbers, words, or even shapes for the little ones. Ask your child to “shoot” the letters as you call them out or sound them out. This is also a great muscle building activity to help develop fine motor skills.

Have fun and don’t forget to let yourself get caught up in some of the water fun with your kiddo’s this summer. These sweet memories will linger in their minds long after the school bell rings.

Colored Pasta Tutorial and Activities

Colored pasta is an inexpensive, fun way to teach your toddler a wide range of beginning math skills. Your tot will think they are just playing but they will be soaking up knowledge, and if you let your little one help you can add in a science lesson by mixing colors such as red and yellow to make orange or yellow and blue to create green.

SONY DSC

Items Needed:

  • 2 cups of pasta (for each color)
  • 2 tsps. Food Coloring (gel or liquid)
  • 2 tsps. rubbing alcohol
  • Ziploc Bags
  • Gloves ( unless you are interested in coloring your hands also in which case…carry on)

Mix the alcohol with the food coloring in the baggie and then add the pasta. Put all into a Ziploc bag. Massage pasta and coloring, making sure to cover the pasta with the liquid. Allow to sit for 5 minutes to absorb (Do not let it sit any longer than this as pasta will become gummy) Massage bag again for even distribution. Spread pasta out and allow it to dry for at least an hour.

SONY DSC

Color Recognition/Sorting

Begin with the basics ; Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, and Purple. Give your child a bowl of mixed pasta, and an empty, clean muffin tin. Sit with your child and encourage them to sort the pasta by colors or shape. Reinforce their knowledge by calling out colors as they pick them up, or ask your child to name the color.

SONY DSC

Patterning

Patterning is a very important beginning math skill. Begin with abab patterns (red, yellow, red, yellow) encourage your child to copy your pattern or make one of her own. Lay out a simple pattern line and ask your child to mirror the pattern underneath. If your child masters simple patterns move onto patterns like abc and aabb.

SONY DSC

Counting

Begin by placing several pieces of pasta out on the table, show your child how to point to each piece as you count. This teaches one to one correspondence and will show your little one to count in an orderly fashion. Start with no more than 5 as not to overwhelm your child, when they master that add more or maybe even basic addition or subtraction. “ How many are left if I take away 1?”

SONY DSC

Fine Motor Development

Cut a piece of yarn or string approximately inches in length. Tape one end tightly with a piece of masking tape. Slide a piece of tubular pasta over the tape to the other end, wrap around pasta and tie in a knot. Give you child a bowl of the tube shaped pasta and demonstrate how to thread necklace.

SONY DSC

Sensory Bins

Use colored pasta as a base for sensory bins. Some ideas are to use all colors, add cotton balls for clouds and use it as a Rainbow bin to teach or reinforce colors. All blue would be fantastic with some plastic ocean animals for an Ocean Bin. Red, yellow, and orange for a fall bin with some silk leaves, and acorns to spark a discussion on Fall themes. Give your child empty cups, spoons, tongs, etc and you can extend the learning even farther. Pouring and pinching with tongs develop fine motor skills. Filling containers Science and math come into play.
