Guess what I have been doing in betwen blogging, making dinner, and changing two little ones diapers? Test driving diaper pails!

I am in week 2 of my test run and I am placing two diaper pails literally up to one another to share my opinion with the Mom Central Community. Which diaper pails are the two lucky candidates? The Diaper Genie II Elite (left) and Arm & Hammer Diaper Pail by Munchkin (right).

Let me remind you I am up to my knees in diapers. Both of my children are on solids. My oldest just turned two (hopefully she will be done with diapers when I am done with this trial) my youngest is 9 months old.

It is week two and I have given each pail a pretty good run.

My Thoughts So Far

Diaper Genie II Elite ($34.54 on Amazon, Refills are $16.54 for a pack of 3)

Pros:

• Tall, sleek and slender in the corner of the room – I appreciate the appearance as well as the height.
• A step pedal that opens the top, lid of the container – I can do this one handed!
• Odor Control – I have not had problems yet.
• I can stick other items easily in the pail as if using it like a trash can.

Cons:

• Price of can – though it averages around what most diaper pails cost.
• Price of refills (it can not be substituted with regular garbage bags.
• The mouth opens allowing fumes from old diapers to escape when you put a new diaper in.
• No scent comparment to mask or catch the odors.
  

Arm & Hammer Diaper Pail (Priced $29 on Amazon, Refills are $6.99 for 10 bags)

Pros:

• This pail could sit in the corner unnoticed. Nothing loud or flashy about it.
• An Arm & Hammer Cup at the top of the lid. It can be repalced with baking soda powder to help eliminate the odor. Every tiem you shut the lid, a little bit more is dispersed into the bag.
• I love the top of this pail. When it is open, it has plastic, interlocking  pieces that hold out trash. They are not abrasive when placing a diaper in. I think this keeps the trash out better as the mouth is never full opened to let out the smell of older diapers placed in the pail.

Cons:

• The knob on the door broke the day I opened the package – even before use. The knob required a screw and the hole for the screw is already stripped so every time I place a diaper in the pail the door pops open.
• Short – I wish it had more room to allow for more diapers – this makes shorter bags which need to be changed out more frequently.
• The Lid – it takes time to press and lift the handle with the same hand the diaper is usually in (assuming the baby is in the other hand)
• The height – it is short.
• Doesn’t utilize as a trash can very well. I like to use both.

As the next couple weeks approach there are two things I want to continue to focus on 1) How often I replace the bags 2) Give Munchkin a call and see what they would advice with that broken door – I am all about customer service 3) Odor control – does the smell stay out over time!  It is my goal to included the worse of the worse diapers in the pail because I truly want to tell you what I think in terms of which one (of the two) I would tell a close friend to buy.
